Hotel Paris Montmartre

History of Montmartre

The hill of Montmartre, in the Middle Ages called Mons Martyrium, was considered a place of pilgrimage. It was in the 12th century that the Benedictines wanted to grow vineyards and build windmills, which had stopped with the Revolution. In 1860, cannons were installed there as well as observation posts for enemy lines.
The hill was later colonized by artists from the 18th century including Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, Apollinaire and even Braque and Picasso.

The Montmartre district today is a very vibrant district in the 18th arrondissement.
The busy streets such as Rue des Abesses are similar to villages. The particular atmosphere and its important history make it an area of Paris you can't miss.
