Hotel Paris Orsay Museum

History of Orsay Museul


Opened July 14, 1900, on the eve of the World Expo, the Gare d'Orsay, built by architect Victor Laloux, was used as such until 1939. She quickly proved inadequate to the growing number of travelers and she was successively been used as a reception center for prisoners on release, location by Orson Welles, by the theater company and Renaud Barrault by Drouot auction house.
It was in 1973 that the idea of ​​a museum was born, but it was not until 1977 that the decision official. On 1 December 1986 the museum, after internal renovation by Gae Aulenti, was inaugurated by François Mitterrand.

The Musée d'Orsay shows in all its diversity of artistic creation in the Western world from 1848 to 1914, a short but exceptionally rich. Its collections, which are between those and those of the Louvre Museum National d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, are all forms of expression, from painting to architecture, to sculpture, decorative arts, photography ...

The collections are presented in chronological order. The ground floor is devoted to the year 1848 • 1870, the upper level are the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists, the School of Pont Aven and Nabis. At the median are the works of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century


Near the Musée d'Orsay
 

Au n°2 de la rue de Bellechasse L'hôtel de Salm bâti en 1786 abrite le Musée de la Légion d'honneur et des Ordres de Chevalerie.
Il présente l'évolution des ordres de chevalerie et de la noblesse de l'ancien régime, ainsi que la création de la Légion d'Honneur par le Premier Consul en 1802.
Une partie des salles est consacrée aux décorations militaires et civiles ainsi qu'aux ordres étrangers.
